Biographical Sketch:
He was born in now-defunct
Savage, SC. Savage was near the south-most tip of Florence
County, near the boundary with Marion County; see the SC 1895 Rand-McNally Map .
Charles is listed as "Arch'd. Cox", age 6/12 months, in the 1860
census. He was 12 years old and at home with his parents in 1870.
He was single and living with his parents in 1880; his occupation
is listed as "Cooper Terpt" (turpentine cooper).
He married first to Emma
Burgess Kennedy, probably between 1881-1882. They had two children, John William Cox and Alma Irene Cox.
A third child, an infant daughter, died on January 27, 1895; Emma died
several weeks earlier, in early January 1895 or late December 1894, as
proved by a very brief entry in The Watchman and Southron (January 30,
1895) shown below. It is said that he left his
children with his wife's widowed mother (Emma Louise Watts Kennedy) and went
to his brother, Nelson Cox , in
Bainbridge, Decatur County, GA. It is said that he sent support,
and that visits were exchanged. He settled in Moultrie, GA and ran a
barrel factory called the Colquitt County Cooperage Company.

A very careful issue-by-issue reading of Library of Congress digitized The Watchman and Southron
personals information (usually page 5 of a typical 8 page edition)
between January 1894 - January 1895 yielded no further mention of his
wife.
Charles Henry Cox married Rosa Caroline Steadham on Jan. 13,
1897. They lived at 6th St. N.E. in Moultrie and had 10
children. Moultrie is about 60 miles northeast of Tallahassee,
Florida. See the Georgia 1895
Rand-McNally Map.
The
census of 1900 erroneously states Georgia as birthplace of Charles
Henry Cox and his parents; the 1910-1930 censuses correctly state South
Carolina as their birthplace.
The census of 1920 indicates that Rosa Steadham
and her mother were born in Georgia, but that her father was born in
South Carolina. Her father was Joseph T. Steadham (Mar
27, 1850 - Aug. 16, 1934); he was born in Sumter County, SC and
died in Early County, GA. The 1880 Georgia census states that he
and his parents were born in South Carolina; however, the 1870 census
indicates that only his father was born in South Carolina.
Census Data:

Notes:
His death
certificate lists his birthplace as "South Carolina" and his father
as "Arthur Cox"; his parents' place of birth and his mother's name are
listed as "DK" (presumably, Don't Know). His birth date and date
of death are given by his death certificate and his grave marker.
The census of 1930 indicates that he was age 70 at his last birthday
and was 26 when he first married. His marriage to Emma Burgess
Kennedy might have taken place around 1885, although his son John
William Cox was born in 1883.
