Notes:
His birthplace, his wife's maiden name and her birthplace are proved by
the death certificate of their daughter Mattie F. Pate. His
father's name and birthplace are proved from the death certificate of
Levander's half-brother William H. Pate. Details of his life
appear in his
obituary (probably written by his son, Rev. John Thomas
Pate). It also appears in The
Watchman and Southron (June 12, 1883 issue). Also see LOC link to obituary page.
He appears in an 1840
Richmond County, NC school index as "Garlington Pate." He
would
have been about age 14 in 1840. Also listed is Esther Pate, who
might
have been his 11 year old sister. His other two sisters and older
brother were beyond school age in 1840.
At age 24, he was left a share of property under the terms of the will
of his maternal grandfather Samuel D. Pate.
However, when he was around age 28 his father Thomas
Pate died, apparently in debt. Levander was living in SC when
his father died; he is referred to as "Garlington Pate" in probate
documents
of his father.
He is buried in Sumter Cemetery
(Sumter, SC). The Masonic
poem
on his gravestone reads:
"There is no death. The stars go down; to rise upon some fairer shore, and bright in heavens jeweled crown. They shine for evermore."
The death certificate of his daughter Mattie
Pate states that he was born in Gibson, NC.
