Biographical Sketch:

Mattie is not mentioned in Julia Pate's book.  However, she was a daughter of Levander Pate and Martha Stubbs.
Mattie was presented a scrap book whose inner front cover is inscribed in pencil:

Miss Mattie Pate
     from her brother
                  Tommie

"Tommie" must have been Rev. J. Thomas Pate, especially given the religious content of much of what is pasted into the book.  The scrap book is a 580 page "recycled" book.  Its spine is entitled with:

DEPARTMENT
OF
AGRICULTURE
REPORT
1884

Mattie pasted newspaper clippings, stories, poems and articles on 306 pages of this book.  Pages 307-320 have been torn out, and do not appear to have been pasted upon; perhaps they were removed to make the book more compact.  Many of the articles are about religion, with numerous newspaper clippings of weddings and funerals of family and friends.

The earliest clearly dated article (1883) is the obituary of her father, Levander Garland Pate; the latest dated article (July 28, 1906) is also an obituary.

Notes:

She never married.  At age 12 her father died, and her elder brother Samuel died 3 years later.  During the last 15 years of her life she lost her mother and elder married siblings John Thomas, Lillie and James Frank.

Her obituary appeared in The Watchman and Southron (September 22, 1915 issue)

Her parents, birthdate and date of death in 1915 also are proved from her State Newspaper obituary and SC death certificate.

Her gravestone was inspected by Gayle Cox Sneed on March 11, 2001.  Only Mattie's name appears on the stone; no dates are present.

Age given as 9 in 1880 Census.  December given in 1900 Census.  Her birthdate is mis-stated as 1880 on her death certificate.  Her estate is shown in the Office of the Judge of Probate as Bundle No. 205, Package No. 45.  She is buried in Sumter cemetery (Sumter, SC).
