Sumter Cemetery gravestone of James Frank Pate and Katie Allen Pate

He was "National Representative of S. Carolina."  See photo from Mattie Pate's scrapbook.
Walsh's directory for Sumter, SC (1905-06) shows him living at 16 Council.  He is listed as a notary public and proprietor of Pate's Music House (at 15 S. Main).  His wife is listed as Mary A.  Also, Fred M. Pate is listed as a student living at 16 Council.

Julia Pate's book says James Frank Pate had two children:
1) LaRee (who was married by 1915)
2) Frank

The Census of 1900 shows a girl named Katie L. Pate (born Sep 1890) living with her maiden aunts Lou Pate, Blanche Pate and Mattie Pate at the Liberty St. house; however, she is no longer in the house by 1910.  The two children LaRee and Frank show up as niece and nephew in the probate papers of Mattie Pate.
James Frank's 2nd wife Abbie had 3 other children by a previous marriage, as  implied by the 1900 Census; this census indicates that they had been married less than 1 year.  Julia Pate's book says he was married twice.

The 1900 Census shows:
1) 1900 was year zero of their marriage;
2)  Abbie had 3 children
