Biographical Sketch:

Known with certainty:

1850   John (b 1845) is at home in SC with his parents and siblings.  His middle initial "F" is shown in this census.

1860
John (b 1845) is at home in SC with his parents and siblings.

Perhaps he died in Civil War, but there is no evidence that he enlisted or served in the Confederate Army. Unlike his older brother Solomon, John has not been located in Civil War records. There is no mention of him in the Marion County Census of 1869.  It is possible that he simply died at home in SC at some time between 1861-1868 and was buried on the Cox farmland.

The scenario below is illustrates how easy it is to construct a plausible (but false) genealogical connection.  What essentially disproves the connection of this John Cox as a son of Archibald Cox, Jr is the fact that John enlisted in the Confederate Army in Greenville, SC as proved by his pension application, and that of his wife, filed long after his death.  Greenville is far from Marion County, SC.

However, what makes the connection seem possible is that, after the war, this John Cox (with both parents born in SC) ended up in Georgia with wife Alice C. Parker (May 8 1864 - May 1 1947).  Before 1898 he also may have had an earlier wife, Annie (1849 - < 1898),
who was born in Ireland and may taken in 2 nephews and a niece.  However, the birthdates do not accord with the consistent ones from the 1850 and 1860 censuses.

1870   Neither John nor Annie nor Alice have yet been identified in census records.

The following census data fits a scenario where he lived out his life in GA.

1880  (Richland County, GA).  John (b 1847) with wife Annie (1849 - ?) and the children were:  Joe (1872 -  ?, born in SC), Charlie (1878 -  ?, born in GA)  and Mamie (1879 - ?, born in GA).  For all three, their father and his parents were born in SC and their mother and her parents in Ireland.  Three Carney children from an earlier family also are present.  They are 2 nephews and a niece:  Joe Carney (1868 - ?), Annie (1872 - ?) and Jerry (1874 - ?).  These three were born in SC with both parents born in Ireland.  A 55 year old German woman, whose parents were German, is also in the house.  John is listed as a blacksmith.

1881 - 1898:  Apparently Annie died during this period.  John is
said to have married Alice Parker on Feb 13 1898.  The 1900 census shows John and Alice had been married 2 years.

1900 (Murray County, GA) John (b Apr 1840) with wife Alice (May 8 1864 - May 1 1947)  and the children were:  John H (1890 -  ?, born in GA, father and mother born in GA) and Rosa A (1899 - ?, born in GA, father born in SC and mother born in GA).  A third child had died before 1900.  Their father and his parents were born in SC and their mother in GA.

1910 (Floyd County, GA) John (b 1840) with wife Alice (May 8 1864 - May 1 1947) and two children John Henry (1889 - 1968, born in GA)  and Alma (1898 - 1984, born in GA).

1920 (Gilmer County, GA) Only Alice (widowed) and her son John Henry remain

Also see: Alice Parker Cox gravestone in Hopewell Baptist Cemetery (Gordon County, GA). Annie was very probably born in Ireland as indicated in the 1880 census.  Alice's birthplace in 1900 is listed as GA and as TN in 1910 1920.  Also see Find-a-Grave info about Alice.
