He may have been the father of Virgil W. Manuel, but this is not established.  He later married Mary P. Manuel and had 8 children with her; she is said to have married Riley Cope twice.  

In 1880 he is shown married to Phoebe D. Sweat  (Sep 15 1856 – May 8 1884) , a woman about 20 years his junior who he is said to have married on Feb 14,1877 (ref 1); several new children are in the household. 

In 1896 he again married a much younger woman, Annie E. Spillards (Apr 1872 – 1912), 41 years his junior, and had at least 2 children with her (1 alive in 1900).  See the 1900 census.
