Biographical Sketch:

She married first to Thoroughgood Pate on January 20, 1807; they had two daughters, Elizabeth and Mary (1810 - ca 1842).  Their marriage was Jan. 17, 1807, according to Marlboro County, SC probate records.  She married second to John Brickhouse (1796 - bf 1860)

See p. 49 of Julia Pate's book.

Other children (with Thoroughgood Pate):
Mary
(1810 - ca 1842) + John C. Thomas (ca 1801 - Mar 1868). Married on July 15, 1818; they had 6 children.  See note.

About John Brickhouse (ca 1796 - bf 1860) of Marlboro County, SC): Census data prove that he was born in SC.  He and his wife moved to TN before 1840.  See Tennessee US census Gibson County 1840a 1840b  (shows 1 male age 40 & under 50 +
1 female age 40 & under 50 + 6 children). He is found in 1850a 1850b, but not his wife. He is no longer found anywhere in 1860.

Other children - with John Brickhouse (ca 1796 - bf 1860) of Marlboro County, SC (and later TN):
Arnold (1820 - af 1850)     See:  1850a
Latimer (1822 - 1892) + Mary C. Odom
Harriet (1825 - 1891) + William M. Jones
John W. (1828 - ?) + Martha M. Edmundson
Murray (1830 - 1861/65) + Susan Tinkle    See:
1850b
Elizabeth (1835 - 1900) + Arville B. Whitehurst    See:
1850b

She is possibly the wife of John Brickhouse in the
1840 TN census.  If so, she appears to have died before the 1850 TN census.
Census Data:

1800 -- in the household of her father, Charles Bright
1810 -- In the household of husband Thoroughgood Pate.  He is age 26-44 and his wife is age 26-44.  One girl is under age 10 (probably Elizabeth K. Pate) and another is age 16-25 (possibly Mary Pate).
1820   In the household of John Brickhouse (Marlboro County, SC).  Household residents
1830a 1830b -- Household of John Brickhouse (Marlboro County, SC).  Wife is between ages 30-40.
1840 -- TN census.  Household of John Brickhouse.  Wife is between ages 40-50.
1850 -- TN census.  Household of John Brickhouse. Wife noted in 1840 census no longer appears

The John Brickhouse found in the 1820 and 1830 Marlboro County, SC census has a woman in the household whose age would be consistent with Frances Bright's.  In 1820 the Marlboro County Brickhouses have 1 son and two daughters, whose ages are consistent with those of Arnold Brickhouse, Elizabeth K. Pate and Mary Pate.  In 1830, the only other female in the househouse is under age 5 (probably Elizabeth Brickhouse); there are also four young males (probably Arnold, Latimer, John and Murray Brickhouse).  Note that Frances Bright's daughter Elizabeth K. Pate would have been age 21 and married by 1830, as proved by the will of Elizabeth's grandfather, Charles Bright.

John Brickhouse (of Tyrrell County, NC) continues to appear in the 1840 and 1850 census.  Note that Currituck and Tyrrell Counties are contiguous in the extreme coastal northeast of NC; they are quite distant from Richmond County, NC, the SC border or Marlboro County, SC.  See the 1824 Finley map.

Conclusions:  At least between 1810 and 1830, the only Brickhouses relevant to the Cox genealogy are those found in Marlboro County, SC.  In 1850, John, John W. and Murray Brickhouse are found in Gibson County, TN (19th Civil District; pp. 69, 72 and 70, respectively); William M. Jones and W.F. Whitehurst are on  p. 72.

SC Marriages 1755-1820 says:
1) Jan 17, 1807
2) July 15, 1818

When she was about age 40, her father Charles Bright provided for her in his will.  She was married to John Brickhouse at the time of Charles Bright's death in 1830.

She signed a renunciation of dower on May 2, 1835 to 363 acres of land conveyed by John Brickhouse to Barnabas Wallace (recorded in Deed Book O, p. 122, Marlboro County Courthouse, Bennettsville, SC).

It is said (Julia Pate's book) that she and Brickhouse moved to Alabama; however, no census records seem to exist to support this.

John C.(Covington?) THOMAS (c.1801-1868) was in deed records in Marlboro County from 1823 to 1830. In the 1830 census of Marlboro Co, there were several adults, in addition to his children, enumerated in his household. His first wife Mary was on a deed with him in 1831. In 1830, the heirs of Charles BRIGHT dec'd deeded (for $5.) 94.5 acres to the children of John C. THOMAS. By 1836, J.C. had moved to Alabama. Children born in SC were Elizabeth, William M., and Henry B. THOMAS. Children born to Mary in AL were Samuel P. and John C. Junior. In 1853, John C. THOMAS returned to SC from TX to sell land apparently inherited by the children of his first wife Mary. I need parents of John C. THOMAS and the last name of his first wife Mary.
