Andreas and Cathrina Harter lived in Wurttemberg, Germany.  The birth of Jacob Harter, their last child, is recorded in the Wurttemberg church records.  Andreas, Cathrina and their surviving 7 children immigrated to America in 1750, sailing from England to Pennsylvania aboard the ship Osgood.  Jacob Harter was only 5 at that time.

"The Harters of Barnwell District, South Carolina (c.1753)", by Mannie George (Mickey) Smith, is said to claim:

Andreas Herterrer had a son, Jacob Harter born May 16, 1745
Jacob had 4 sons:

The book is said to say that John Jacob might have gone to Texas with another family when he was 8 - 12 years old or so.  Other info about the book:

Jacob Harter was born in Germany in 1745 and came to America with his family about 1750. They settled in Pennsylvania but it is believed that Jacob and his father travelled to South Carolina where Jacob married and had at least 4 children. Information on the descendants of Jacob Harter is given in this volume. Many of these descendants still remain in South Carolina.
