Bertha Cox Chandler
Charlotte
Bertha Cox Chandler, died December 17, 2011 in her 94th year at the
Levine Dickson Hospice House, Huntersville, NC. She died peacefully with
her daughter, Bruce Chandler, and nieces, Janine Zurcher and Janice
Woodruff by her side.
Mrs. Chandler was the widow of Benjamin (Jack)
McCrea Chandler, and daughter of the late Robert Harllee Cox, Sr. and
May Ruth Hyman Cox. She was born on June 30, 1918 in Pamplico, Florence
County, SC. In addition to her husband, Bertha was predeceased by her
three brothers, Robert Harllee Cox, Jr., Willie Lee Cox, Marion Gene
Cox; two sisters, Edna Mae Cox Bryan, Mildred Cox Richardson, and her
infant son, Johnson McCrea Chandler.
She is survived by her sister,
Doreen Copeland of Florence, SC; her daughter, Bruce Chandler of
Charlotte, NC, and her grandchildren, Suzanne Marie (Bobby), Bertha
Walker (David), and John Chandler Fernandez (Brandi Tonnesen) all of
Charlotte, NC. She is also survived by three great-granddaughters and
numerous nieces and nephews.
Bertha was a well regarded genealogist
and a member of The Daughters of the American Colonist and The Colonial
Dames, where she served many offices, including Chaplain from 1985-2001.
She was awarded the Registrar Emeritus honor in 2007. Mrs. Chandler was
a member of Union United Methodist Church where she served as Sunday
School teacher, Methodist Youth Fellowship leader, Historian and a
member and officer in the Womens Missionary Society.
She and her
husband were farmers by trade and lovers of the land and woods. They
spent their life restoring the land and the house on China Grove
Plantation in Georgetown County. Mrs. Chandler maintained an active and
healthy life until she contracted shingles almost four years ago and had
since suffered extreme pain daily. Her last mission was to implore
every person to get a shingles vaccination at the earliest age possible.
The family would like to thank Mrs. Chandlers special caretakers
throughout her life, Dr. George Varn, Dr. Alan Thalinger and his nurse
Corrine, and Dr. David Grabeman.
A graveside service of committal
will be held Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 1pm, followed by a memorial
service in the Sanctuary at Union United Methodist Church, Hemingway,
SC. The family will greet friends following the service in the church
Fellowship Hall.
